What are porcelain veneers?

Dental veneers are made up of thin layers of porcelain which are used to cover the entire surface of your tooth – much like a false fingernail – to improve the look of your teeth or to disguise dental flaws.
You might choose to have porcelain veneers if you have:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Stained or discoloured teeth
  • Gaps between your teeth
  • Minor misalignment or crooked teeth

Porcelain veneers have become a popular treatment with patients from White City, Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush and West London because they can be used to treat one tooth or give a complete smile makeover. Many celebrities choose porcelain veneers for a dazzling smile.

What is the process for porcelain veneers in Shepherd’s Bush?

Consultation

At your first consultation, we will discuss what you would like to change about your smile. We will assess your teeth, mouth and gums to make sure that they are all healthy and that you are suitable for dental veneers. We may take x-rays of your teeth.

Preparing the teeth

At your next appointment, your dentist will prepare your tooth or teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel so that your veneers can be attached. This is a painless procedure. Next, your dentist will take an impression of your mouth and teeth, this allows us to create your final custom-made set of porcelain veneers. Temporary veneers are then fitted whilst you wait for your bespoke set.

Fitting of the porcelain veneers

When your final set of veneers are ready, we will invite you back to the dental practice in Shepherd’s Bush to fit them. The porcelain veneers are stuck to the surface of your teeth using a dental gel. Finally, a special light is placed over your mouth which sets the veneers in place.

FAQs

How long do porcelain veneers last for?

Porcelain veneers should last between ten and fifteen years, after which time you will need to get them replaced. You can extend the lifetime of your veneers by taking good care of them – regular brushing, flossing and ensuring you visit the dentist and hygienist regularly. You should also avoid biting on things like your nails, pen lids and hard foods such as nuts, ice, apples and popcorn which can all chip your porcelain veneers.

Will my porcelain veneers stain?

Porcelain is very durable and should not stain. If you know that your teeth tend to stain, you should try to minimise your consumption of darker food and drinks like red wine and spicy curries.

Will my veneered teeth be sensitive to hot and cold?

As a small layer of enamel is removed prior to fitting your veneers, some people do notice that their teeth are more sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks for a short time after having treatment. This will disappear within a few days, but we recommend avoiding hot and cold food and drinks for the first few days.
